I can’t speak highly enough of this course or Holly! I had such a good time, and I’m so glad I did it here.
When I decided to do my IDC I looked at a few different options but from the very first email I knew I wanted to do it with Holly in Gili T. She was super helpful and friendly and gave me plenty of advice on transport and accommodation options etc. It is a big decision and a lot of money, but just emailing back and forth with Holly, any concerns I had were put at ease and I knew I was making a good decision.
When I arrived, everyone made me feel really welcome. Holly is a great teacher, she is passionate about what she does and her enthusiasm is addictive! She also made it clear at the beginning of the course that she would stay as late as we needed in the evenings and give us any extra time we needed to practice… She’s very committed to her students and it obviously pays off when it comes to the IE 🙂 We also had Anisha and Ronny helping on the course and they were awesome! They were there when we needed extra practice and super helpful if you needed a bit more one-on-one support.
The course itself is well organised and gives you plenty of time to practice everything several times with extra time to go over anything you’re not confident with. It’s hard work but interesting and you can see so much improvement in such a short space of time, making it all worth it. As much as I was nervous by the time the IE came around, I knew I was fully prepared and felt like there was nothing else I could do.
The facilities at the dive centre are awesome – there is a dedicated, conditioned classroom for the IDC so you can stay in there as long as you need and use the materials in the evenings or outside of class time. There are also lockers in there so you don’t have to carry your materials around all the time (much appreciated!). There are 2 pools so plenty of space when everyone is working together, and you are free to jump in for extra practice whenever you want.
I am so glad I did my IDC there and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to become an instructor. I’d love to return in the future to become a staff instructor – I can’t think of anyone better to do the course with!
– Emma Harvey, PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI)
I came to Gili Trawangan with the purpose of doing my IDC with Holly and it was the best decision I could have made! Holly has a seemingly limitless knowledge of diving and she always has time for any questions you may have. She has perfected the design of the course to ensure the best learning experience possible. If you are thinking about becoming a PADI Instructor, Holly is the only way to go!
I could not have picked a better place to take my instructor development course! Holly is extremely good and teaching and training and made these two weeks a memorable moment together with her crew! Do not go anywhere else, you will never regret it!!

After working as a dive master for some years, I finally decided to do my IDC. It is such a big decision where to go, as there are so many places in the world to choose from. However, stop deliberating if your deciding to do your IDC……..GO WITH HOLLY! You won’t be disappointed! I firmily believe she is the best in the world!!!
From the moment I got in contact with Holly over the internet, asking for more information about the IDC, she was fantastic! Her responses were quick and informative and nothing was too much trouble. Once arriving on the island Holly and the rest of her team were so helpful! They gave me recommendations as where the best places are to stay and also helped me find a place. Beautiful Anisha, one of the staff instructors often takes people around all the home stays and shows you the best ones to stay in. (I recommend you do this and buy her a beer after! She does this just from the kindness in her heart and she’s amazing!)
The course itself was one of the best courses I have ever done. I loved every part of it (Maybe not the Physics!) But grew to love even that towards the end! I have to mention Holly’s amazing team that also made the course what it is. Anisha and Ronnie were our Staff Instructors and they really were FANTASTIC. I couldn’t of done it without them all!
Throughout the IDC, I often thought I wasn’t going to be able to pass and it was over-whelming at times. However, Holly’s patience and her endless knowledge really does prepare you so well. I can’t thank Holly and the rest of her team enough…….they all do an amazing job! I now feel completely prepared and excited to start my teaching career and has made me fall in love with diving all over again!
If you decide to go to Holly for your IDC…….it will be the best decision you make in your diving career! I was sad saying goodbye to a beautiful Island and I believe I have not just furthered my diving career but have made great friends and gained excellent mentors for life! Thank you…….!!!

Passing the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is the the first significant step into diving as a career. The environment in which you learn, the people who you’ll meet and the dive school where you take the course are all important considerations. The most important factor when considering taking the IDC is the PADI Course Director who delivers the course.
Gili Trawangan is a superb location to take the IDC course. The island attracts people from around the world to experience the island atmosphere, enjoy the island’s restaurant and bars and check some of Indonesia’s finest diving.
My family and I have been customers at Trawangan Dive since 2006. The learning experience is quite simply the best on the island. The staff are superb at making your time on the island the best it can be.
The IDC experience is not complete, however, without the most important component – Holly. Holly’s delivery of the IDC is nothing short of perfect. Her support and time throughout the course were crucial to my success. It is important to be reassured and comfortable knowing you are getting the finest training from a Course Director who is nothing short of superlative in their field. Holly absolutely fits this criteria, striving to make the course both enjoyable and productive, so you know you are getting the finest experience for your investment. Anyone considering their IDC with Holly at Trawangan Dive Centre need only look at her past record to see the unparalleled success she has worked for over the last three years.
I have returned to the Gili islands on an annual basis since for ten years now and no period of time was more rewarding and fun than the IDC course. I challenge the reader of this review to find a less than excellent rating for this IDC programme. Under Holly, you will not find one.
– George Drain, PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI)
Wow, what to say! I came to Gili with one thought and that was to do my IDC and finally become a instructor! Later after talking to different people in the diving world and researching online then I only heard one name, Holly Macleod! Believe me, you won’t be disappointed!
I started talking to Holly about 10 months before I were to start the course. Even though that I first decided to do the IDC in November and then later decided to push it back until April, she always made me feel welcome and it was never any problems with anything ( even though that I probably asked about 10000 questions, hehe)
Any how, once you come to the island and then walk to TDC to meet up with Holly, you always get greeted with a friendly smile and boom, you are now a part of the TDC family. She does a thorough walk through about all the steps and books and how to get ahead if you are like me, not a study person( don’t worry, in this IDC the you get drilled so much so in the end, you don’t even realize how much you actually know) and with the dream team of Justin and Ronny then you always have someone to ask. Through out the course you have an amazing schedule, you always have the opportunity to stay late and study or get in early in the mornings and start, if that’s not your cup of tea, then you have plenty of sleep ins if you feel that you are keeping up with the curriculum. Holly makes the perfect schedule and there is plenty of breaks so don’t think that you will be stuck in the classroom for 12 days!
You start off by just thinking of this as another step towards your goal, OWSI, Open Water Scuba Instructor. But after the IDC, thinking back on the memories, new friends, new experiences, you later realize that this is the beginning of a new life and to do this major step from being a Divemaster then it is only one person to do it with, Holly Macleod and you will get a friend and mentor for life!
After looking for several months for a good place somewhere around the globe, on January 2016 I had the awesome chance to do my IDC with Holy Macleod in Gili IDC.
Not only the dive sites were great and well taken care of, but most importantly, I have learnt so much and grew as a professional diver.
Holy is extremely patient, super friendly and you constantly have the feeling she deeply knows what she is talking about. No matter what question you ask or when you do it, she will always be there to answer with a beautiful warming smile.
All the rest of the team are also amazing. Always available for theory questions, advices or even jumping in the pool, literally no matter the hour of the day. The atmosphere was so welcoming, so motivating and definitely so, so, so supportive!
After doing the IDC in Gili IDC, you are more than ready to pass the most difficult exam. The exam is always scary and sometimes you might feel like you will not make it… But when the moment comes you are more than ready! I remember opening my exam and thinking “really? Piece of cake!”.
I was so happy about the experience that several of my friends went to do their IDC there too. And they were as happy as I am.
It was definitely a very enriching experience I will never forget and I will always be grateful to Holy and the Gili IDC team for helping me so much.
– Lucia Rubio Fernandez, PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI)
I have recently finished my PADI IDC course at Trawangan Dive and my course director was Holly Macleod. The IDC has totally changed the way I feel and handle situations when it comes to diving and teaching of course. The course can be quite stressful, but at the same time it was great being part of such an amazing IDC team and this is something I will always remember.
It is also nice to be on the other side of the fence, immediately being thrust into the role of teaching others which builds your confidence and knowledge rapidly.
Holly teaches in both a fun but serious way which totally prepares you for the PADI Instructor Examination. Her knowledge of the diving business and personal dive experiences are amazing and during the course she will go completely out of her way to prepare you and steer you towards the right direction.
I am so happy that I decided to take my Instructor Development Course with Holly, here at Trawangan Dive. I have become a more confident diver and teacher for sure. The IDC was an extremely enjoyable course and I would always recommend everyone to come here to take their PADI Instructor Development Course.
– Fiona Smith, PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI)
I first heard about Gili Trawangan through a friend who took their PADI Divemaster Course on the island and had nothing but good things to say about it. Gili Trawangan is a beautiful island with an extremely relaxed atmosphere and incredible diving. I first came across the Trawangan Dive IDC Course when searching the internet and e-mailed them with a bunch of questions. I was very impressed when I received a personalized response from the Course Director.
The Gili IDC at Trawangan Dive totally exceeded my expectations. It is a well-run, organized a fun dive center with fantastic staff and perfect facilities. The Course Director, Holly is an awesome teacher; explaining complicated theory and concepts in an easy to understand way, extremely down to earth and has now become my dive mentor. The Gili IDC is an intense course and Holly is the perfect teacher to help guide and support you through it. I would definitely recommend the Gili IDC at Trawangan Dive to anyone looking to become a PADI Instructor.
– Sheridin Davidson, PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI)
I was originally set to take my IDC in Koh Tao Thailand and decided to visit a friend who happened to be working at Blue Marlin, in Gili Trawangan where I decided to take some fun dives. Whilst diving with Blue Marlin I got talking to Holly, and further into the conversation realized that she was the Course Director and conducted their IDC program. I knew straight away after the first conversation I had with Holly that I would rather do my IDC Course with her, here in Gili Trawangan. She was very easy to speak to and explained the whole program to me, so I guess it was an easy decision. Even before the IDC course had started Holly gave up some of her free time and conducted some theory sessions with the group to get us off to a good start.
I feel that I have learnt a great deal from my IDC Course and it has given me a lot of confidence in both diving and in life as a whole. Holly can be very serious at times, but also knows how to have a laugh which in my opinion provides a great mix.
I feel that the IDC at Trawangan Dive provided a great learning environment, alongside some great people with a fantastic course Director. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
– Harvey Mills– PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI)
I came to Gili Trawangan with a couple of weeks before the IDC started, and the first person I met was the PADI Course Director, who took me around the dive center, introduced me to my fellow IDC candidates and informed me all about what was going to happen during the 2 weeks of the IDC. Already before the IDC started I could tell that the whole IDC course was going to be worth everything. The course itself was very intense, but I really felt like I learned so much. The IDC team was hard but fair and a great help whenever there was something I could not understand or figure out. All this helped me taken every single moment very serious. On my course we were lucky to have Ellie and Donna who were doing their IDC Staff instructor, and they also helped us a lot, and it was great to get other dive professionals thoughts and help with our presentations. When the day of the IE came, I was of cause nervous but all of us realized that because of the way we were taught, the IE was the easiest presentations we had ever done. It was great to see our IE and the fact that we all passed meant so much to Trawangan Dive. You really get the feeling that they care about her work and the IDC candidates. After passing my IDC I now work as a freelance instructor, and whenever I am in doubt about something, I can always get help from Trawangan Dive. So even when you have finished your course, they still care.
– Anne-Louise Krogen, PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor
We chose Trawangan Dive to do our Divemaster course as their initial correspondence was top notch and they didn’t seem at all fazed by the fact that we were both Deaf. Throughout our course, all of the instructors were professional, readily available and when asked upon they were really thorough. The Divemaster course was challenging at times but the staff were always on hand to instil confidence. We were given ample opportunity to ‘work’ as a Divemaster under the eager eyes of our instructors, giving us real life situations such as guiding dives, loading the boat, assisting with equipment and assisting on courses. We were also asked to assist with a Shark Awareness video and we thoroughly enjoyed this; this made us feel like one of the team! Based on our experience; we are seriously considering doing our IDC at Trawangan Dive. This is because Trawangan Dive are committed to small group sizes which enables the Course Director to give a personal touch to the IDC.
– Nick Gregory and Helen Gillespie, PADI Divemasters
I did my IDC at Trawangan Dive in August 2010. I’d been keen to become a dive instructor for a while but wanted to find the right Course Director. I’d met different Course Directors in Thailand, all of which had been running IDC’s for years, but I couldn’t escape that feeling of just being a number, another candidate to run through the IDC factory. The IDC with Trawangan Dive couldn’t have been more different. With a smaller group size, there was more time for one-to-one counseling and more opportunities to practice our skills, whether in the classroom, in the pool or in open water. I was impressed by The Course Director’s dedication as she spent literally hours teaching dive theory to another candidate who only had a basic grasp of English. When I arrived at the Instructor Examination, I felt more than prepared to cope with the demands of it, and sailed through the two-day process coming out with near perfect scores. Shortly after the IE, I accepted a full-time position as a dive instructor and have not looked back since!
– Philip Moores, PADI IDC Staff Instructor
My name’s Mike and I teach Paramedics in the UK. I was lucky enough to get some time off work so I decided to fulfill a long term ambition to become a Dive instructor. I had three months and was an Advanced Open water Diver but with only 24 dives, so basically I had a lot of work to do! I had taken my Advanced course in Gili Trawangan the year before and really liked the island, I’d spent one afternoon with my girlfriend at the pool bar in Trawangan Dive and really liked the vibe of the place. So knowing no more than they had a funky pool bar, I signed up for my Rescue, Divemaster and Instructor Courses. Straight away, even while I was still in the UK, the team there couldn’t have been more helpful, answering e-mails about all sorts of questions I had. And as soon as I arrived I knew I’d made the right decision, the people were just magic. Really friendly and made me feel right at home. Trawangan Dive is a really nice place to hang out, the food is great and the staff are fabulous, lots of whom would become good friends. It became apparent very quickly that although the instructors there are fun and easy going there also very professional and really good at their job. I’m a teacher for a living so I can say with some level of appreciation that the quality of teaching here is excellent. The instructors are all very different characters, with their own style but all of them will look after you and make sure you get the most out of your experience. I spent the next few months learning so much, I’d always just followed the person at the front and switched off, now I was the person at the front and it gave me such an appreciation for the responsibility that goes with the job and why you need professional people around you. Finally it came to my instructor course, I’d done my Rescue course and was now a qualified Divemaster. I’d also partied a lot and had an all round brilliant time. As I’ve already said I teach for a living so I can say, and know what I’m talking about that The PADI Course Director here is a bloody amazing teacher! If you do your IDC with her you will have no excuse not to pass, she will teach you all you need to know and make sure you are fully prepared for you exam. I knew very little about the place and took a chance and it was a great decision.
